I don't know what happened to today...it somehow got away from me. At about 4:50 I realized that I never sat down and wrote. Not good. In fact, I wasn't even really sure what I was going to write about so I was very close to just forgetting about it all together. Then bath time happened.
For days my husband, who is in charge of bath time, has been telling me that Superman has been leaning over his bath seat (which is similar to this one) to try and stick his face in the water. My reply each time has been, "so let him". My husband was all concerned that he might hurt himself, but I tried to assure him that as long as he was there watching and he didn't let him stay under for more than a second, the worst that would happen is that he would hate it.
So tonight, as I was folding laundry in the next room, my husband called to me and said that he was trying to do it again. So I rushed into the bathroom to take a look. Sure enough he was bending way over and putting his mouth into the water.
My response? Lots and lots of cheers! So then he wanted to do it again and again and again. At one point he did a raspberry into the water and blew bubbles and I went nuts! I was so proud of him for a) liking his face in the water and b) being able to blow bubbles so young.
My husband, not to be outdone by his son (I tease), decided he would start blowing bubbles too. Superman thought this was just great and began giggling up a storm. Of course it also just made him want to put his face in the water more as well because he loves to imitate what his daddy does. He successfully blew bubbles several times and if we had let him stay in the bath any longer, I am sure he would have really gotten the hang of it.
Tonight was one of those moments that I hope I always remember. The pure joy and laughter was something I wish I could bottle and keep forever.
I would love to hear some of your moments of pure joy with your children!

Thrown
Yesterday I posted on Facebook that during his nap, Superman was not actually sleeping, but rather crying because he had thrown his two stuffed animals and his blanket to the floor. I wanted reassurance that I shouldn't go in and retrieve them. Actually I really only wanted to retrieve the blanket, but that is neither here nor there. Of course, everyone told me to hold strong and that going in would merely reinforce the throwing of items out of the crib.
The problem is that the throwing of items isn't isolated to his crib.
When I put him in his "baby corral" to play for about 30 minutes every morning, he throws his toys out. He doesn't cry when they are out of the corral, unless he throws his blanket. Then he tries to reach for it and cries. I don't usually put the toys back in, but will hand him his blanket again (and he doesn't throw it again during that duration).
Then when he is in his high chair...watch out! He will be eating away and the moment he decides he is done with a food, he starts dropping it off the side of his tray. This is a real issue considering we have two dogs that are ready to pounce on any piece of food that hits the floor. We have tried telling him no, but he doesn't seem to understand or doesn't care since there isn't anything that happens if we say no and he does it again. Do almost one year olds even understand "no"? In the end we end up taking the food away and if he reaches for it, we give him it to him piece by piece, but sometimes he eats it and sometimes he takes it out of his mouth and tries to throw it on the floor. It is really frustrating.
So...HELP!! What do I do? Are these situations even connected or are there different things going on? What would you do?
Thanks!

Baby Love
He looks at me...and I melt.
He reaches for me...and I melt.
He scrunches up his nose and giggles...and I melt.
He bobs his head to the music...and I melt.
He stops himself in the middle of his play to throw himself at me...and I melt.
He takes a step away, but turns around to make sure that I am still there...and I melt.
He cries out in pain or tiredness or simple sadness...and I melt.
I will never be able to describe this feeling adequately. It isn't like I have never felt love before....I have felt it from my family and friends...and obviously from my husband. But this is different.
This is a love that stops me in my tracks 100+ times a day.
This is a love that changes my mood in an instant.
This is a love that seems so pure and perfect while feeling so unbelievably strong and unwavering.
This is a love that surprises me.

A whole lot of everything...
I have lots of different thoughts running through my brain today so here it goes....
Not surprisingly, a lot of you feel or have felt the same feelings I have had about being a mom lately. Beyond the few comments here, I have received a couple emails from friends and my sister got her mommy friends to comment on her Facebook page and it feels great to know that other moms "get it". I feel so honored to belong to the "Mommy Club" where other moms stick up for each other, help each other out, and routinely remind us that we are in fact doing a good job. Thank you!!
Through the last post I put out into the universe that I needed help entertaining or playing with my 2 month old. "They" say when you put your desires out into the universe, the universe will answer (or something along those lines). Well I had my "New Mom Group" through the hospital that I delivered at yesterday. It is run by an amazing postpartum doula (she also works for the hospital) that has begun to bring in guest speakers periodically. Today we had the visitor that I had been needing....the owner of a local Gymboree!! By the time she was done I felt like I had some more tools to be entertaining to my baby. She showed us a position to sit in to play with our babies, gave us these beach balls that allowed our babies to do "tummy time" in a new way, sang some songs (some I knew already thanks to being a teacher), and played with the parachute. I think we will wait to actually go to Gymboree till Sam is older, but I am grateful for the tools I now have.
On a side note, I thought I might share my journey of weight (gain and) loss. I know that so many moms struggle with their weight after having children and although that isn't my personal issue...I am still overweight and struggling with it. You see, when I got pregnant I was about 50 pounds over weight...that is really hard to admit because I lost 50 pounds with Weight Watchers just a few years ago. Life happened though and it is what it is...now I just have to do something about it. So a few weeks ago I signed up for Baby Boot Camp and Weight Watchers.
Baby Boot Camp is a postnatal workout class where you get to bring your baby in a stroller as they kick your butt back into shape. Seriously, many of the women in my class are these amazing athletes now (granted they have toddlers now so they may have been at this awhile). I have come a long way since my first class and I am already starting to feel physically better. During my last class I ran/walked over 2 miles and averaged about 5.5 mph! I have a long way to go, but I am really enjoying my butt kicking 3 times a week.
I go to Weight Watchers on Tuesdays...and yes, today I weighed in. So far I am down a total of 4.8 pounds in the 3 weeks I have been going! I feel like I am starting to get back into the groove of things. Thank goodness for the extra points you get when you are nursing. I definitely need them!
Love,
Mommy C
